Layers of Discovery is a branding project that focuses on rebranding the Environmental Interpretive Center located in Dearborn, Michigan.
The Environmental Interpretive Center is an environmental conservation center on the University of Michigan-Dearborn campus. Many of their visitors are kids, locals, and fellow travelers walking the trails. Despite this, the EIC is invisible to the general public. Many find the EIC by accident due to its hidden location on campus.
The EIC approached us in hopes of increasing visibility among visitors, especially Dearborn students, who are unaware of its existence. This was a semester project in collaboration with the interior design department. I, along with my team, was tasked with creating a new innovative space that aligns with the values of the EIC for the community.
We approached this project with the intention of conserving the roots and purpose of the EIC. With this, we created a concept: Layers of Discovery. We recognized that caring for nature is a journey of discovery. Discovering nature begins on a personal level. Eventually, one reaches a level of understanding of how nature affects the environment on a global scale, hence the “layers” of discovery. The EIC staff understands nature more than its audience. Our design solution bridges the gap between the EIC staff and its audience with a modern design.
